OUM’s new and improved entry point

New students beginning in January 2018 and beyond will be greeted with a new 30-week basic science course that will replace the combined e-ITM module and e-Foundation 200 series, which current students in the e-ITM track have already completed.

Beginning in Term 1801, the e-Foundation 300 Series Track will replace the e-ITM Track. The two tracks differ only in how they approach the basic sciences. The system-based modules and clinical curriculum remain the same for both tracks.

“We think students will find it a lot easier to grasp the concepts in the e-F 300 when they’re concentrated into one place, rather than as they were previously – in the     e-ITM and then several weeks-to-months later in the e-F 200,” says Scott Cunningham, MD, PhD, Director of Curriculum and the course’s architect.

The e-Foundation 300 series will deliver the basic sciences in a total of 180 contact hours as follows:

SubjectContact Hours# Weeks
Molecular Biology and Medical Genetics244
Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, and Embryology183
Behavioral Medicine and Biostatistics122
Microanatomy and Cell Biology122
Total 18030

The content for each basic science subject will be delivered in lectures over two- to four-week blocks that are grouped into one of three 10-week segments.  A one-week break between segments gives students a chance to catch their collective breath before beginning the next intensive round. American students and those interested in passing USMLE will continue beginning their OUM program in the Basic Science Track. Click here for the curriculum chart showing the Basic Science Track.

Calendar adjusted – tuition unchanged

The inauguration of the new e-Foundation 300 Track caused some changes in the Academic Calendar for 2018,

which will accommodate the two offerings of the new course in 2018 and into 2019, eliminate the e-Foundation 200 series after Term 1802, and delay by one week the January New Student Orientation to 26-27 January. Click here to see the new Academic Calendar for 2018.

Because the new offering features roughly the same content as the e-ITM and e-Foundation 200 series, the tuition fee will remain the same for the new e-Foundation 300 course —$10,000, payable in installments throughout the term.

The e-Foundation 300 course and 2018 Academic Calendar were vetted and approved by OUM’s Steering Committee, the University’s management committee of faculty and administrative leaders; the Academic Board of academic leadership, students, and a graduate member; and the OUM Council, the University’s governing body which includes members from Australia, Samoa, and the United States including student and alumni representatives.
