Thank you for visiting the online home of Oceania University of Medicine. We are proud to share our medical school with you.

Becoming a doctor is much more than a career choice. For many, it is a calling. Some individuals hear and follow that calling early in life. Others continue hearing that call for many years but experience too many barriers to make it a reality.

Oceania University of Medicine (OUM) fills that void. The original concept of an online curriculum evolved from Samoa’s remote location and shortage of physicians. But many areas of the world and their residents experience similar barriers, both geographic and personal.

The primary components of our distance learning program combine old and new concepts in medical education theories. OUM adopts problem-based learning – like many of today’s traditional medical schools – with impressive educational modalities and technologies. While valuable interaction comes from online instructors and classmate study groups, it is also provided by physician mentors in a student’s home community.

Until the early 1900s, when medical education moved to the university setting, doctors were trained by becoming apprentices to experienced physicians. When the apprentice relationships could no longer keep up with the growth in science and medicine, they faded from existence. Unfortunately, so did the valuable learning associated with having a role model. At OUM, we believe the impact of role models is one of the least thought about, but strongest, influences on a medical student and young physician.

We welcome you to our website and hope you will take time to review our approach to learning, and contact our admissions staff for additional information. Distance education has grown exponentially in recent years, and OUM is proud to provide the proper blend of distance learning and face-to-face hands on instruction for the highest quality academic and clinical training for tomorrow’s medical community.
