OUM Student Bailey Ralston

Student Research Presentation: Assessing Australian-Based Medical Students’ Preparedness in Promoting Physical Activity in Clinical Practice

OUM student Bailey Ralston will present important research exploring how well future doctors are being prepared to promote physical activity in clinical practice, a key factor in preventing and managing chronic disease.

Surveying 97 Australian-based OUM medical students, Bailey’s findings revealed significant gaps in preparedness. Only 31% correctly identified physical activity guidelines, while just 26% understood appropriate referral pathways to Accredited Exercise Physiologists. Confidence in advising patients and prescribing physical activity was also low, with 85% of students reporting they felt inadequately prepared by their curriculum.

This timely research highlights the growing need for practical, integrated education that equips future doctors with the skills to confidently promote, prescribe, and refer patients for physical activity in modern healthcare settings.

OUM Student Anshul Das

Student Research Presentation: An Assessment of Patient Knowledge and Practices Regarding Antibiotic Use in a Primary Care Setting

OUM student Anshul Das will present timely research examining patient knowledge, beliefs, and practices around antibiotic use in primary care, an important issue in the global effort to address antimicrobial resistance.

Surveying 210 patients across general practice clinics in Australia and New Zealand, Anshul’s findings revealed a notable gap between patient attitudes and understanding. While stewardship-supportive attitudes were nearly universal, foundational misconceptions about antibiotic resistance persisted, and more than a quarter of respondents reported potentially inappropriate antibiotic practices during their last course.

This important research highlights the need for clearer clinician counseling and structured communication techniques, such as teach-back, to help translate positive patient intentions into safer antibiotic use and support stronger antimicrobial stewardship in primary care settings.

More speakers will be announced soon.
